The trades nobody is marketing to

Three things Tim raised, argued from our own data · built 2026-08-13

h32 · the finding
55%of the water-well businesses we found in Texas have no working website. 31 of 56. Not a gap in our data — the state of the trade.

Why this is the sales argument, not an obstacle

A business with no website cannot be marketed to by anyone. Not by us, and not by any competitor of ours either. Every marketing tool on the market starts by asking for a URL.

It also means the 25 businesses that do have a site are competing against 31 that cannot be found at all. The bar in this trade is on the floor. A site that answers three real questions and loads on a phone is, right now, a competitive advantage.

And it reframes the market size. Counting businesses with websites undercounts the addressable market by roughly half — the ones without are not out of reach, they are the least served.

How this was measured. 56 businesses classified by Google into the water-well trade across Texas. 23 list no website at all; 8 list one that does not load. Both count as unreachable, because a site that does not load is a site a customer cannot use. Figures are read from the knowledge base each time this page is built, so they cannot drift from what the engine actually holds.

Sorted by review count — a proxy for how much business they already do without a website. The ones at the top are not struggling. They are busy, and invisible.

Identical code, one configuration file different. Home building produced more engagement from fewer than half the companies, and the people it surfaced buy things. Magnetics surfaced the industry watching itself.

h25 · the size of it

Tim’s sizing: ~20,000 homebuilders · ~100,000 trades · ~25,000 manufacturers — all with websites, none running automated marketing.

“These are the people who will survive AI.” — Tim, 10 August

The water-well finding adds a second tier underneath it: for every trade business with a website there is roughly another with none. Those are not a worse prospect. They are an easier one — there is no incumbent agency to displace and no existing site to argue about.

The target Paul set is a couple of hours a month for an owner to run their marketing department. For a business currently doing none, that is the whole proposition.

What this changes in the build

A business with no website needs one before anything else. The engine currently assumes a site to audit. For half this market the first deliverable is the site itself — which we can produce in about ten minutes, as the windmill client showed.

Google Business Profile outranks everything for these businesses. Several of the companies above have dozens of reviews and no website at all, which means the profile is already doing the work a site would. Finishing it is free, and it is now the first free channel the engine proposes.

Maps, not LinkedIn, is the instrument for local trades. Searching LinkedIn for well drilling returns oil-and-gas multinationals; the businesses a rancher actually calls are not on it at all.
